Humidity within Fire Safes and Chests

We are often asked about humidity and dampness within Sentry Fire safes and Sentry Fire Chests. The level of humidity will depend on both local climatic conditions, air circulation within a building (e.g. Damp basements, and how often the safe is aired.

The Sentry Safe Technical Department have issued this advice:

1. Humidity inside the chest/safe varies dependent on where the safe is kept, how often the door is opened and how old the safe is therefore we are unable to specify the actual humidity maintained within a safe. What we can say is all products are tested for its contents to withstand heat from a fire up to a certain temperature depending on the model. The max temperature depends on the model and what protection time it has been tested to.

2. Our products are tested to protect some plastic products such as CD’s/DVD’s, USB drives and memory sticks therefore plastic containers should not be affected by heat whilst inside the safe; we suggest using in particular containers suitable for microwaves.

3. All Sentry fire-safe safes and chests may allow moisture to accumulate inside your safe. We suggest that you open the safe at least once every two weeks for approximately 20 minutes to air the contents.

4.The desiccant packet is intended to absorb the moisture inside; however, you CANNOT store pearls in this unit as stated in the Owner’s Manual under Warning. This should help absorb excess humidity in the safe and should be changed out periodically. Please make sure that you check these packets when you open your safe. If they appear moist, you should dry them completely by either placing them in your oven at the lowest temp possible for no longer than 1 1/2 hours, or setting them out to air-dry in the sun.

5. Any items that need to be isolated from moisture should be stored in airtight containers that are dishwasher or microwave safe, such as Rubbermaid or Tupperware. To alleviate any musty odour, we suggest that you periodically remove the items from the safe and wipe the interior with a mixture of baking soda and water and allow to completely dry.
